On the road!

We took our geocaching expedition on the road today. Off to Mobile, Alabama to visit the wife's family and to geocache, of course!

First off, was a little place on Dauphin Island. This cache was not the typical tupperware box or army ammo can. It was a bird house!

One of the greatest things about geocaching is that it takes you places you would never go otherwise or know about. The next cache took us to an old cemetery in downtown Mobile. So old, in fact, a confederate cemetery from the civil war was located here. Most headstones were in the 1861-1865 time frame. Exploring the cemetery on the way out, I saw a headstone that was dated 1799! Holli's Mom proved to be a great geocacher for her first time!!
On the way to the next couple of "treasure boxes" on the west side of Mobile. Came across one of the nicest parks ever! It had a nice walk in the woods which hid a frisbee golf course and a geocache!
Off to a birthday party now. Had a great time in Mobile and found some really fun geocaches. On the road again next week to visit family in Texas. Yes, I've already put together my map! See you out on the trail!

It's a cache-a-thon!

Sunday we had our biggest one day bag of caches ever... Seven! Headed over to Pensacola for our geocaching adventure today. Our first stop was to our favorite geocaching stop, Dairy Queen! This Dairy Queen was special because of the awesome outlook into the bay, but it was also hiding a geocache close by, very close, in the parking lot! It was in the bushes across from the drive-thru so we had to watch for drive-by muggles. Trale jumped in to find this one.

University of West Florida was a gold mine for geocaching, we hit a few on a nice hiking trail on campus. Round trip we walked about a mile. The last one had a revine running through it, so holding the kids tight, we walked around to the treasure location which was under a really big fallen tree. There was a log nearby perfect to sit and check out the loot. On the way back from UWF, we made another stop to DQ for an ice cream snack. We headed back down scenic highway back towards the house, and stopped by my favorite irish pub restaurant, McGuires. There was treasure hiding there! When we pulled up, my GPSr was pointing to the bushes that had cars on both sides. I tried (not very hard) to find it, but no luck. Holli jumped out and shouted "I will find it!" Sure enough, she did.

Holli reached in and pulled out a little box that had some cool stuff inside. She got me a geocaching pin to put on my hat and Trale got a pin too. I'm so proud of my Bean, she actually most of the geocaches today. She's one step away from becoming a geogeek.

One more stop before going home for the day. Number 7! It was at the little park in Navarre on Highway 98. Another great view of the water. GPSr showed we were -8 feet below sea level. No wonder the hurricanes did so much damage here.

Another fun day of Geocaching at the Nixon Ranch! See ya next time! See these pics and more in our photo album.
